Selecting a DIY electric floor Heating Kit

Measure the overall length and width of the room, multiply this to get the total floor area then deduct the floor space taken by any fixtures, such as WC’s, vanities and cupboards, to arrive at the actual heated floor area.

By proceeding with the selection of your underfloor heating method, a drop down list will enable you to match a selection based on your heated floor area in square metres. A price will then be shown.
Contact us if in doubt about either the method or most suitable length.
Each room or zone must have a separate cable. Cables must not be cut or altered in any way.

Thermostat Controls

THERMOSTATS ARE NOT AUTOMATICALLY COMBINED WITH EACH CABLE.

Why? Sometimes, particularly with larger areas, one thermostat is used to control two or more floor heating cables.

Select one thermostat per heated area (zone).

Monitor

An alternative to regularly testing a cable during installation, is to add an inexpensive monitor to your kit. One can be moved from area to area as the cable is covered. Connection is simple, and a high pitched noise will be emitted if the cable is damaged.

Thin bed floor heating cables

Widely used for under tile heating and involves thin (2.5mm) cable, which is either incorporated within the adhesive bed, or preferably embedded within a 3mm self-levelling material.

When you proceed to select your cable size, it is simply a matter of choosing an option that is closest to the floor area in square metres that you wish to warm. When making this selection, the price will be shown.

The cable is purchased by the reel. Installers generally find this is the easiest installation method for thin cables as individual run spacings can be adjusted to suit the room size and heat density. When supplied attached to mats, the spacing is fixed and cutting the mats to work into irregular spaces can be quite difficult.

In-screed cables

Although this system is most commonly used in bathrooms, it can be used in larger areas, usually over concrete floors. The heating cable is pinned down to the floor and a 25 – 50mm sand/cement screed is spread over the cable.

When you proceed to select your cable size, it is simply a matter of choosing an option that is closest to the floor area in square metres that you wish to warm. When making this selection, the price will be shown.
More than one cable may be needed for large areas

Concrete floor heating cables

These are extra heavy duty cables made to Heatec’s specification and are fastened to the reinforcing mesh. The system does not provide fast response, as the mass of concrete takes several hours to warm up. However this is not a problem in well insulated homes on a concrete floor, where internal temperature changes are gradual anyway. Furthermore, this allows for use on the lower-cost restricted hours electricity tarrifs.
More than one cable may be needed for large zones.

Timber floor heating

This can be done by either of two methods, depending on the floor construction and access.

If installation is required over a concrete floor, battens are fixed down at 450 spacing and four runs of cable are taped down to the floor before the flooring is laid.

For timber floors supported by joists on bearers, the cable can be fixed to strips of chicken wire suspended below the floor. Thermal insulation must then be installed below this.

Under carpet heating mats

These mats involve floor heating cables, sandwiched between two layers of specially reinforced aluminium foil. The uniform spacing of the heating elements, further backed by the aluminium foil, ensures even heat distribution. The heating element is connected to a power-supply cable, which exits the laminate mat from one corner.
Since the mat is taped over the underlay, the response time is excellent.

The mat material is sold in 500mm wide rolls in the following lengths. The rolls can be cut to lay back and forth to build up the required shape.

More than one mat may be required for a large area.
